His skills on the football field are actually going to be put to greater use… John Abraham, who is a huge lover of the game and has some nifty footie moves too, will apparently be playing a football coach in his next film with Shoojit Sircar. The film, which bears the working title 1911, is apparently based on Mohun Bagan’s victory against East Yorkshire Regiment in 1911.
It was considered a landmark victory as the East Yorkshire Regiment was the top British team at that time and their defeat at the hands of Mohun Bagan was nothing short of a sensation. (Definitely, a ‘Lagaan’ of sorts here!) John is currently busy filming ‘Welcome Back’ and has Nishikant Kamat’s ‘Rocky Handsome’ lined up next but we bet he can’t wait for the year-end, when shooting for 1911 is set to begin.
One wonders just how he will be able to make the time to attend the FIFA World Cup finals to be held this July, but knowing the footie-crazy John, chances are he will be there in Brazil, cheering himself hoarse, his pretty wife by his side! He had, after all, confessed last year, “I love travelling to a lot of spots, but the place I would like to go now is to Brazil.
I love football. I want to go for the World Cup Finals.” 1911, incidentally will not be John’s first football-centric film: the star had played the lead role in ‘Dan Dana Dan Goal’, a film that told of the on and off-field experiences of an Asian football team in Britain. 1911 has been written by the ‘Gulaab Gang’ director Soumik Sen and will show how Mohun Bagan went on to become the first native team to have won the IFA Shield, playing bare-feet and in dhotis against the superior Brits.
