Main Tera Hero Movie Review and Ratings (4/5)

Take off your thinking hats and psyche yourself up for a full-on madcap caper by David Dhawan, the man who has amply proved that onscreen buffoonery done by a spontaneous, comically gifted actor (like Govinda) could turn out to be a laugh riot, however silly be the gags. The question is: does his son Varun Dhawan make the grade in Main Tera Hero?

Varun tries too hard to fit the bill but isn’t in the Govinda ballpark. He sure can dance, can fight, can crack a funny one now and then, and even throb his formidable male boob much to the admiration (or envy?) of the two pretty and curvy actresses flanking him. But he ain’t a riot yet.

Luckily, his dad David Dhawan hasn’t lost his funny touch and he dishes out Tushar Hiranandani’s screenplay and Milap Zaveri’s slapstick lines with a hammering effect. And backing Varun is a slew of talented actors like Anupam Kher (playing a don who repeats everything he says thrice because he was born in ‘waadiyaan’ and therefore used to the echoes of sounds), or Saurabh Shukla (playing the don’s sidekick), or Rajpal Yadav (as a cop’s crony).

The story goes like this. Seenu (Varun) is a pain in the bum for everyone around in Ooty. He leaves for Bengaluru to pursue a college degree but falls head over heels for a pretty Sunaina (Ileana D'Cruz). Trouble is not far from Seenu. Angad (Arunoday Singh) is in love with Sunaina and won’t have anyone hitting on her. Worse still, he’s a cop.

No sooner does Seenu’s love story with Sunaina gets going than she’s kidnapped by a Bangkok based don (Anupam Kher), whose daughter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) has a serious crush on Seenu.

Seenu reaches Bangkok and there unfolds the screwball tomfoolery as both the ladies vie for his love. Angad, too, joins the melee.

Slapstick humour flows endlessly throughout the film, backed with Milap Zaveri’s silly but funny lines. Sample these: Varun Dhawan confronts goons armed with hockey sticks and says, “Haath mein hockey lekar, pant mein jockey lekar, aisey chowkidar ki tarah kyu khadey ho?” In another scene, Nargis Fakhri the pampered daughter of the don tells Ileana D’Cruz, “Jab se main Pampers (diaper) mein thi tab se mere dad mujhe pamper kar rahe hai.”

It’s all crass humour that needs you to suspend your finer sense to enjoy it. Varun Dhawan is the film’s centerpiece. Senior Dhawan flaunts his son to the world as the wholesome hero package, someone who can dance, romance, fight, and also make you laugh. In fact, the film could as well be titled ‘Main Sabka Hero, Varun Dhawan’.

For his second film, Varun does a good job, though there’s a lot for him to work on. Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri are the eye candies, with the former adding romantic charm and the latter oomph to the film.

Slapstick and silly but funny nonetheless, Main Tera Hero is an entertaining watch.
