NEW DELHI: After a vitriolic and bitterly personal election campaign,
there was an unexpected moment of warmth seen between two bitter rivals
-- Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi
- in Parliament on Monday, a report by the Press Trust of India said.
The occasion was the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, addressed by President Pranab Mukherjee to outline the Modi government's plans on Monday.
In a gesture of friendliness, Narendra Modi warmly grabbed Rahul's hand and exchanged pleasantries with him. The move brought an immediate smile on the Congress leader's face.This might be the first occasion on which the two have greeted each other with warmth following a bitterly fought election.
Modi, during the high-voltage election campaign, had frequently attacked Congress leaders, especially Rahul, referring the latter as 'shehzada'.
Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi was seen speaking with BJP stalwart LK Advani for a long time.
Sonia, who was severely critical of Modi during the election campaign, appreciated with thumping of the desk the part of the President's speech which outlined government's commitment to curb violence against women and women reservation bill. She also appreciated the government's mission to cleanse the river Ganga.
Leaders of political ideologies leaning to the left, right or center met each other in a rare display of bonhomie in Parliament on Monday.
